Gibson Custom Shop 1958 Les Paul Plain Top Gloss (Faded Tobacco)
In an effort to jump start the steadily declining sales of the Les Paul Model, Gibson decided to abandon the familiar gold finish and use a translucent, cherry sunburst finish which would show off the highly figured maple tops that were often used on Les Pauls. The renamed Les Paul Standard made its debut in 1958. Features include an early '50s rounded neck with a 22-fret Rosewood fingerboard, Burstbucker humbuckers, an ABR-1 bridge with an aluminum stopbar, vintage tulip tuners and a Custom Shop case.
They’ve also added the vintage PAF Burstbucker pickups as were used in the original spec. This along with the use of bumble bee capacitors gives it a truly vintage signal path. The body is made of a solid piece of Mahogany with a carved plain maple top with a single-ply cream colored binding around the top of the body. The finish is 100% nitro cellulose lacquer (just like the original) and is available in Faded Tobacco, Ice Tea, and Washed Cherry. It uses an ABR-1 bridge with an aluminum stopbar tailpiece.
The 24.7 5 inch scale length neck is made of a single piece of Mahogany. It has 22 Frets on a rosewood fretboard. The trapezoidal inlays are plastic/acrylic and not mother-of-pearl. They are meant to be accurate in size, shape, and color. The neck’s profile is the early 50’s rounded type with the Holly headstock veneer and vintage tulip tuners.
The electronics consist of two Burstbucker pickups in the neck and bridge positions. It has the standard two volume, and two tone controls wired to a 3-way pickup selector. As mentioned it uses CTS potentiometers and bumble bee type capacitors for a more consistent and reliable sound.
