Just Announced: AKAI MPC X & AKAI MPC LIVE

One of the most legendary machines in the history of Hip Hop Music production, the MPC is a unit that has truly stood the test of time. Akai are now back with two brand new models, the Akai MPC X Performance and Production Sampler and the Akai MPC Live Performance and Production Sampler.

One of the biggest gripes people have had with recent editions of the MPC is the lack of standalone versions (which were prevalent in the earlier versions,) however with these two models Akai have gone back too their roots, delivering two exceptional models which can be used without the aid of an additional computer.

Dan Gill, Product Manager for Akai Professional had this to say about the product “In creating the concept for the MPC X we wanted to preserve the classic MPC feel and workflow that people love, however we turned the idea on its head and incorporated the best of what a modern touch-screen interface can offer. What we have now is the most powerful MPC production experience ever.” He was not lying, Akai’s flagship MPC X is built with a multicore processor (with 2GB of RAM) perfect to get the best out of the native MPC Software 2.0 (this can also be run as a plugin on a PC/Mac.) There is a fantastic 10.1-inch multitouch screen and 16 velocity- and pressure-sensitive MPC pads. On the front you will also find 16 touch sensitive assignable pots, a large master encoder know and dedicated menu buttons.

The MPC Live has a very similar layout to last years MPC Touch. There’s a 7-inch multi-touch display, 16 backlit MPC pads, four rotary encoders and a master encoder knob. It also contains an internal, rechargeable battery which we are told has a battery life of up to 5 hours.

Both models come with 16GB of on-board storage, so you’ll have more space than you could ever have imagined from an MPC. There is also 10GB of premium sound content from some of the big players in the sound design world including Loopmasters and Capsun Pro Audio.

In regards to connectivity, there are a whole host of options on the back of the unit. There is a built in 2-in/2-out MIDI interface on the Live and a 2-in/4-out interface on the X model, two audio inputs and 6 configurable 1/4 inch jack outputs on the MPC Live and 8 on the MPC X.

The MPC has always had their roots in the studio, however in the modern music stratosphere so many producers are becoming DJ’s and vice versa. What Akai have tried to do with these two new MPC’s is provide a bridge between studio production and live performance/DJing. Demo’d in the video below, the new Clip Launch mode is aimed at allowing a producer to take their productions to the stage. Although the MPC X and the MPC Live are not cheap, if you’re a fan of the previous models then this is a product that you well and truly won’t want to miss out on.
