Focusrite’s Clarett line is made up of four models of Thunderbolt interfaces, perfect for studio and mobile recordings. We are going to focus on the smallest of the line, the Clarett 2Pre today. Although it’s small in terms of size it’s definitely not lacking in connectivity and functionality.
The Clarett 2Pre is housed in a very sturdy aluminium case. On the front of the unit you will find two analogue mic/line/ instrument inputs and an 8-channel ADAT optical digital input. On the back of the unit there is a Thunderbolt port, four line outputs and 5-pin MIDI In and Out ports.
Each input channel comes with it’s own 48V phantom power switch and Focusrite’s analogue Air effect. The air effect enhances the mic preamp’s frequency response in the mids and highs. It’s a fantastic addition to the interface adding a little extra sizzle and brilliance to recordings.
The interface comes bundled with the Focusrite Control application, allowing you to patch-ins/outs and completely configure channel settings. Also as with all Focusrite products you get a collection of fantastic plugins including the Red2 & 3 and Softube’s Time and Tone Bundle for free.
The use of Thunderbolt connectivity is also a big draw for the interface. It gives you little to no latency when recording instruments and vocals.
The Clarett 2Pre is a brilliant interface if you’re only looking to record a couple instruments at a time. The preamps provide top quality warm sound (with or without Air turned on.) At this price bracket you are going to struggle to find another interface anywhere near this level of quality.
