The BOSS loop pedals have taken the world of looping by storm for the last 17 years, the vast range of possibilities of looping has attracted musical mavericks from each and every corner of the industry, with each one of them bending the rules to fit their vision. The BOSS RC Loop Station series that lit the fuse under the mass hype surrounding looping and as such have become the go-to for anyone in the market for a pedal. However, the notion of looping did it exist pre-Rc series. In 1963 the US jazz musician, Terry Riley, tested the waters with basic tape loops on his track Music For The Gift. By the early-’70s, guitarist Robert Fripp and producer Brian Eno had made progress with the technique with the so-called ‘Frippertronics’ technique, using two reel-to-reel tape machines to create layered sounds. However, the technology was not advanced and was often problematic. The design was often basic and as recently as 20 years ago most only offered a couple of seconds of sampling time and usually resulted in disaster. Queue the creation of the Boss RC Series.
In 2001, the RC-20 Loop Station twin-footswitch unit became a game-changer in the industry. The technique became a mainstream phenomenon, thanks to its unprecedented five-minute sampling time, overdub and real-time tempo change functions, AUX input – plus 11 flash memory slots, ready to be loaded with backing tracks and samples. The possibilities to a solo performer became endless when in 2004 Ed Sheeran chose the updated BOSS RC-20XL and used its 16-minute recording capacity to fuse beatbox vocals, dovetailing guitar riffs and percussive beats on the body of his acoustic.
