Moog Minimoog Model D Reissue 2022 Analog Synthesizer Overview

The legendary analogue mono synth is back a very limited cherry wood finish - produced in extremely small numbers - with modern enhancements such as a premium Fatar keybed, a dedicated analogue LFO, MIDI connectivity.

A Revolutionary Instrument

The Moog Minimoog Model D is arguably the most influential synthesizer of all time. It set the benchmark for what an electronic keyboard should be and established the framework for all analogue synths that followed it, including the Sequential Prophet-5. Legendary artists such as Giorgio Moroder, Bernie Worrell (Parliament, Talking Heads), Gary Numan, Rick Wakeman (Yes), Herbie Hancock, Kraftwerk and Richard Wright (Pink Floyd) helped to weave the sound of the Minimoog into contemporary music.

The Minimoog is an all-analogue instrument that condensed the massive Moog sound first presented with their modular systems. Before the Minimoog, you’d have to take a huge Moog modular on the road with you if you wanted that sound live. As well as being bulky, you’d have to use an array of patch cords to connect the modules together. Without that, the synth wouldn’t make a sound. Upon its release in 1970, the Minimoog presented keyboardists with a compact solution that had pre-wired modules - no patching required. Finally, keyboard players had a portable, expressive and intuitive instrument that could easily compete sonically with a guitarist’s stack of valve amps.

The Legend Returns

Now, over fifty years since it changed the world of music, the Minimoog Model D is back in production at Moog’s Asheville factory - a welcome suprise for synth aficionados across the globe. Like the previous reissue, this run is only available in very limited numbers for a short period of time so make sure you pick one up before they’re all gone. Like the original, the 2022 reissue is a three-oscillator monophonic analogue synthesizer with a truly warm, fat and powerful sound. Ethereal leads, thunderous basses and otherwordly effects, the Minimoog Model D can do it all and more.

The Real Deal

The 2022 reissue retains the classic Minimoog look, housed in a gorgeous locally-sourced Appalachian cherry cabinet and hand-finished aluminium chassis. The reissue features the exact component placement and through-hole design of the 1970s-era Minimoog Model D for true sonic authenticity. The legendary low-pass, rich voltage-controlled oscillators and warm, saturating mixer combine to deliver that iconic sound Minimoog you know and love.

Modern Enhancements

With the 2022 Minimoog Model D reissue, Moog have enhanced it with popular modifications that expand its sonic capabilities and allow it to seamlessly integrate into a modern live performance or studio setting.

First is a premium Fatar keybed with velocity sensitivity and aftertouch for extra expressive control. Both can be routed via the top panel CV jacks with onboard trim pots. Next is the pitch wheel, which is now spring-loaded with a centre deadband - ready for the contemporary soloist. MIDI connectivity lets you connect your favourite sequencer or another keyboard to the Minimoog as well as use it to play other MIDI-enabled synth modules.

A dedicated analogue LFO with triangle and square waveshapes frees up the third oscillator when you want to introduce modulation. A popular trick with the original Minimoog is patching the output into the input to create an aggressive and overdriven sound. Thanks to the reissue’s mixer feedback modification, you can simply turn up the External Input Volume control to achieve the same effect.

For the fact it cost over £5k I wouldn’t have expected it to have an awful external power supply, it’s so disappointing. The power supply is absolutely awful and owners already complaining of noise issues and failing, replacing it under a year.
