Dynamic, touch-sensitive and inspiring valve tone in a stylish, feature-packed and ultra-lightweight form factor.
Blackstar’s revolutionary St. James series of 50W, two-channel head and combo valve amplifiers deliver all the advantages of a traditional valve amp with plenty of modern features. Aside from that, what truly sets the St. James range apart from the pack is how Blackstar have managed to pack classic valve tones and state-of-the-art capabilities into such a lightweight guitar amp. For decades, guitarists that want to enjoy the smoothness and touch response of a genuine valve amplifier would have to deal with the back-breaking weight. With their St. James series, Blackstar has made using valve-based guitar amps easier with zero compromises on tone, performance, or robustness.
The Blackstar St. James series is the British amp company’s answer to a request that guitar players have been making for years - a real valve amp that’s portable and lightweight. As well as creating an amp that guitarists have been wanting for decades, Blackstar has gone even further. Whilst Blackstar extensively studied vintage valve amps as part of the St. James series’ development, they decided not to be confined to the old-school and included useful up-to-date features. If you’re looking for a versatile valve amp that draws upon the best of the past and present, is seriously easy to transport, looks superb and - most importantly - sounds phenomenal, a Blackstar St. James amplifier is the one for you.
6L6
The 6L6 combo is a real chameleon that gives you big bold US cleans and juicy high-gain tones. This model is equipped with a Voice switch that introduces extra saturation, resonant low-end chug and a looser feel. The second channel features a modern preamp gain structure with a British-style tone stack for a tight, percussive tone.
EL34
The EL34 combo is a superb pedal platform amp that offers a vast array of gorgeous tones, from crisp chime to articulate drive and far beyond. The onboard +10dB clean boost can be activated to push your guitar to the forefront of the mix. Channel II is based on a beloved early '60s Class A valve amp and boasts a wide tonal range.
6L6H
The 6L6H is the head version of the 6L6 combo. This portable valve head makes a beautiful sonic and visual pairing with the St. James 212VOC cabinet in Black.
EL34H
The EL34H condenses the sound and tonal options of the EL34 combo into a compact and light head. Pair up the EL34H with the Celestion-equipped St. James 212VOC cab in Fawn for a seriously jaw-dropping tone.
No Studio Needed
The St. James range allows you to record or perform with that magical “cooking valve amp mic’d up in a room” tone silently and without the speaker connected. No external gear, fancy microphones or treated acoustic space required. The full signal path of the amp is used to drive a genuine reactive load, that’s then fed into Blackstar’s proprietary Cab Rig DSP section which offers a near unlimited selection of realistic cab and mic simulations.
Power Reduction
The handy Power Reduction feature lets you adapt your St. James amp to any studio or live performance context and achieve red-hot valve crunch at a lower volume by allowing you to switch between 50-watts, 2-watts or Sag mode. Sag emulates the sound and softer feel of vintage valve amps by generating additional power supply “sag”, accentuating that gorgeous amp compression.
Custom Celestion Speaker
The St. James combo amps and cabs are armed with two lightweight Celestion Zephyr speakers. Blackstar worked alongside Celestion to design these unique 12-inch loudspeakers, which use a traditional ferrite magnet to deliver a big, punchy tone that’s based on the Vintage 30.
Universal Power Supply
Each Blackstar St. James series amp is outfitted with a universal power supply that works across the globe, from 90V to 264V 50/60Hz.
Blackstar named this amp series after one of the oldest areas of Northampton, the city where the company is located. The 12th-century abbey is what gives that part of Northampton its name and is also where the Northampton Saints rugby team is based. The name is also a homage to the legendary guitarists named “James” that Blackstar’s founders revere, including Hendrix, Hetfield and Page, as well as an important James (or Jim) that used to work for them.
