Boss RE Space Echo Series

Sonically authentic recreations of the legendary tape echo with modern functionality.

The BOSS RE-2 and RE-202 are digital, pedalboard-friendly recreations of the RE-201 that deliver the behaviour and sound of the iconic tape echo. By combining their intricate knowledge of the original with technological innovations and extensive R&D, BOSS has managed to nail the unique character and quirks of the RE-201. The vibrancy of the spring reverb, the desirable colour of the preamp circuit, the properties of the magnetic tape and motor - it all contributes to the Space Echo sound and it’s all been digitally realised with flawless precision.

In addition to useful upgrades like true stereo I/O, tap tempo, MIDI and expandable control, BOSS has also improved the sonic capabilities of the RE-201. You can venture into sonic territory that the original could only dream of whilst enjoying the reliability and functionality of a present-day pedal. There’s no doubt about it, RE-2 and RE-202 are the Space Echo effects for the modern player.

Boss Space Echo Series

RE-202 boasts additional features and tonal options over the compact RE-2, including:

  • Bass & Treble knobs for deeper sound sculpting.
  • More flavours of stereo reverb, including Ambience, Room, Plate and Hall in addition to the RE-201 Spring.
  • A dedicated Saturation control for that rich, warm preamp and magnetic tape tone.
  • A trio of dual-function (push and hold) pedal switches.
  • Advanced expression pedal capability - everything on the panel is modulatable via an expression pedal.
  • Onboard MIDI input and output for sync and deep parameter control.
  • 4 memory slots for instant recall of your favourite settings and up to 128 more via MIDI program change (127 + manual).

RE 202

RE-202

The RE-202 is the most advanced and powerful Space Echo yet. It’s the top choice for guitarists, sound designers, producers and synthesists that want deeper control, more tonal options and extra features. Performers and sonic adventurers will love the hands-free functionality of the additional footswitches, which allow you to tap tempo, access stored memories and engage the Warp & Twist effects.

RE 2

RE-2

The RE-2 is a compact and affordable alternative to the RE-202, condensing the warm, saturated tape tones of the RE-201 into BOSS’s pedalboard-ready stompbox footprint. It’s a great solution for guitarists, bassists and synth players that want the famous Space Echo sound in a lightweight form factor. Never before has the renowned Space Echo sound been so accessible, authentic and portable.

Tape echo is a truly special sound that’s graced countless classic recordings across many genres over the decades. Whilst Les Paul and his song “How High The Moon” is known as the earliest recording that featured tape echo, it was Sun Studios engineer Sam Smith who popularised the sound on Elvis Presley’s initial recordings. After Elvis, guitar gods such as Robert Fripp, Brian May and Eddie Van Halen would make tape echo a key ingredient in their signature tone.

The original Roland RE-201, lovingly known as the Space Echo, is easily one of the most sought-after effects units ever made. Released in 1974, the RE-201 combined tape echo and reverb to produce its distinctive sound. Before the RE-201, tape echo units were notoriously fragile and unreliable. The RE-201 raised the bar, presenting a more robust and roadworthy solution that would soon become a mainstay of studio and touring setups. As far as legendary Roland products go, the RE-201 Space Echo is up there with the TR-808, the Jupiter 8 and the Juno-106. The Space Echo has become known for its magical, ethereal sonic identity and its ability to make anything run through it sound better. Rhythmic repeats, lush soundscapes, otherwordly self-oscillating sound effects, the RE-201 can do it all and more.
