Epiphone SG Special VE, Ebony Overview

The Epiphone SG Special VE gives you SG tone and styling and doesn't break the bank. The SG Special is the most affordable SG in the Epiphone and follows on from two of Epiphone's bestsellers. The G-400 and G-310. What the VE does to the SG Special format, is to add a subtle range of vintage worn finishes.

The SG's signature devilish double-cutaway design still reigns supreme and gives amazing access to all 22 frets. The SG Special VE features bolt-on Hard Maple, SlimTaper profile neck with Rosewood fingerboard that's a comfortable and easy to play guitar. A pair of open-coil, Humbuckers (700T and 650R) are plenty hot enough to give you enough grit and grind when you need it.

Even though the Special VE is designed to be the subtle looking and affordable SG, it still features some top-end touches. Things like Epiphone's patented LockTone locking Tune-o-matic bridge and Stop-bar tailpiece are some seriously nice additions at this sort of price. Other unseen additions that demonstrate Epiphone's attention to detail include the pots, which are full-size 500K, and Epiphone's rugged all-metal 3-way toggle pickup switch. These are designed to give you years of hassle and maintenance free playnig

I wasn't sure what to expect with this guitar, at the price point. Having owned a couple of Epiphone guitars over time, though, and having enjoyed them both, I decided to go for it. I have to say, very pleasantly surprised. The guitar is well made, well finished and came well set up. No buzzes from the electrics, good pickups and just about enough sound variation with the single volume and tone controls. Through my pedal board I'm getting good sounds. The neck is nicely shaped with a satin finish at the back, which makes for fast playing if that's your thing. The frets and fingerboard are fine for my tastes - not too jumbo - and the neck is playable all the way to the 22nd fret. While the guitar is (very) light in weight, I'm getting reasonable sustain and bluesy play is available easily. The finish of the guitar is kind of vintage -y but not relic'd. I like it. Overall a great piece of kit for the price.

It's a very affordable guitar. I bought it for my daughter who is just beginning. But I am genuinely amazed about what you get for your money. The finish is very acceptable, the sound is extremely good with lots of variation possible, and it is very playable.

This is a stunning guitar for the money. I am absolutely delighted with it. It has made me feel and sound like a much better guitarist than I am. It's so easy to play and sounds like a considerably more expensive instrument.
