Epiphone Thunderbird Classic-IV PRO, Vintage Sunburst Overview

The Epiphone Thunderbird Classic-IV PRO marks the returns of classic rock bass! Updated with Gibson USA TB-Plus humbuckers, with ceramic magnets. Groups like Motley Crue, The Who, Cheap Trick, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steely Dan have contributed to the reputaton of these awesome basses over the years, but even back in '63, when it was originally introduced, it was an instant classic.

Now, Epiphone takes all the vintage mojo of the Gibson original and brings it bang up to date with these Gibson TB Plus pick-ups. The Thunderbird IV was originally the brainchild of car designer Ray Dietrich and was one of the most radical designs to come out of Gibson in the early/mid '60s. With its iconic reverse headstock and distinctive body shape still turning heads as quickly today as it did back then. But it's not just all about style, the sound of the Thunderbird IV was as cutting edge as its design and now the Thunderbird Classic-IV PRO returns, with the addition of Epiphone's first-class build quality.

The Thunderbird Classic-IV PRO features mahogany body wings and a rock-solid, 7-piece mahogany/walnut neck with through-body construction for amazing sustain and articulate tone, and has a '60s style rounded profile. Overall the bass is 34" in terms of scale length and the neck has a rosewood fingerboard, a 12" radius, 20 medium-jumbo frets, a 1.50" nut, and understated dot inlays

Where things get really interesting is in the addition of the Gibson TB Plus humbuckers with ceramic magnets. Ceramic magnets are a great choice for the classic Thunderbird tone due to their high gainsmooth tone and high-end definition and bite. The Gibson TB Plus humbuckers are traditional hum-cancelling pickups that are wax potted and epoxy filled, to give you full frequency, heavy-bottom tone. This bass definitely delivers the kind of huge, powerful bass tone the Thunderbird IV has made its name delivering.

The Epiphone Thunderbird Classic-IV PRO features premium die-cast 14:1 bass machine heads and an Epiphone 3-point adjustable bridge, much like the original design, but more reliable. The 3-point adjustable bridge gives players the ability to fine-tune the height of the Classic-IV PRO's bass strings in all directions - front, back, and side-to-side - giving the bridge a "floating" profile and complete flexibility in bass set-up. The Thunderbird's timeless and legendary resonance, tone, and sustain is the direct result of the firm seating of the strings in the body provided by this bridge design.

Beautiful powerful noise beast Just the sound I was after - big fat full sound with an edgy low-end. The treble comes to life when using only the bridge pick up and this setting will definitely spice things up if used with overdrive. Great range of sounds all round as a result of independent control of each pick up plus one knob for tone and the Gibson humbucker pick ups, which make the sound very rich and dense. I have played the Epiphone pick ups version and don’t think it reaches the same depth of sound. So the extra cash and the wait for stock to be available have been worth every penny if you ask me. Overall I’d say the sound has a very defined character and adds to the band sound rather than blending in and gluing it all together. Very much directed at metal, noise and experimental art-rock bands! Looks are a surplus and part of the appeal. Worth bearing in mind It has quite a long neck with a impressively oversized headstock...While that does not make it easier to play, it will help developing proper bass playing techniques. Neck dive issues you may see in forums discussing the tbird are addressed by manufacturers by repositioning the bolt on where the neck meets the body. This has to do with the construction as the epiphone t-bird basic version is different. I got a 2.75-3 inch leather strap with a suede backing which keeps the bass in place at all times - With the long neck, this is important to me. Between the strap and the bolts positioning I find the bass lighter than expected with weight well distributed.

This bass is a stunner for its price. I was concerned about annoying neck dive reports but this has been rectified by the relocation of the neck strap pin ( well done Epiphone ). The straight through neck feels lovely, no sharp edge fretwire to file down and the sound of those Gibson pups... they just growl ! Beautiful finish on mine too, feels great to play, looks amazing, sounds fantastic, can't fault it. I was a bit unsure whether to get the standard one or the PRO version but paying a bit more to get the PRO with Gibson pickups was well worth it. Highly reccommended.
