Honouring the guitar that broke the mould and changed the face of rock ‘n’ roll, the EVH Frankenstein Relic Series stands as a testament to the innovation and iconic sounds of Eddie Van Halen. This striking series faithfully replicates Eddie’s legendary red, black, and white Frankenstrat guitar, embodying the soul of rock with its distinct worn-in relic’d finish.

Crafted from a solid basswood body and equipped with a punchy Wolfgang humbucker, EVH Frankie Relic series models deliver a mid-rich tone that can cut through a mix and handle heavy overdrive or distortion with ease. At its heart is a direct-mount Wolfgang humbucker, designed to capture the essence of Eddie’s classic tone — ideal for driving a high-gain amp to its limits. These models encapsulate the timeless vibe of the Frankenstrat, delivering a classic aesthetic wrapped around a powerhouse of performance.

The EVH Frankenstein Relic series, with its slim, quartersawn maple neck and a swift compound-radius relic’d maple fingerboard, is primed for lightning-quick licks and intricate solos. Further enhancing its playability, the D-Tuna-equipped Floyd Rose is strategically positioned against the body, offering instant access to Drop D tuning and the capability to mimic Eddie’s signature tremolo action with finesse.

What guitar is the EVH Frankenstein Relic Series based on?

The EVH Frankenstein Relic Series is a tribute to an iconic instrument that has marked its territory in the annals of rock music - Eddie Van Halen’s very own Frankenstrat guitar. The image of this distinctively striped black-and-white guitar on the cover of Van Halen’s debut album has been ingrained in the minds of guitarists and rock music fans ever since its release. It symbolised the dawn of a new era, a guitar that the world had never seen or heard before because, in reality, such a guitar had never existed until Eddie Van Halen breathed life into it.

Eddie Van Halen was not just a skilled musician but also an ingenious inventor. The Frankenstrat was a result of his constant tinkering, his relentless quest to create an instrument that transcended the standard offerings of guitar shops. This determination led him to fashion his “super guitar” - a product of an $80 neck and a $50 factory-second body, both of which were modified extensively to suit his requirements. He fitted the guitar with a fat-sounding humbucking pickup from an older semi-hollow body guitar, potted it in molten paraffin wax to reduce feedback - a technique now widely known as “potting”, and modified the bridge plate for better tuning stability.

This guitar, with its unfinished neck, larger fret wire and an iconic striped paint job (inspired by the Dutch “De Stijl” art movement) using black and white Schwinn acrylic lacquer bicycle paint, became a game-changer. Eddie’s craft cost him less than $150, but its impact was priceless. This was the guitar that introduced the world to “Eruption”. It was the tool used to create trailblazing guitar music, later donned a red coat to complete its iconic status.

Eddie further enhanced the Frankenstrat by replacing the original tremolo with a prototype locking tremolo system built by Seattle designer Floyd Rose during Van Halen’s second world tour. Fans, enthralled by the magic Eddie created with this instrument, christened it ‘Frankenstein’. Yet to Eddie himself, it was always “my baby’”

The EVH Frankenstein Relic Series is a tribute to this legendary guitar. It emulates the unique design elements of the Frankenstrat - from its solid basswood body and fast-playing compound-radius relic’d maple fingerboard to its direct-mount Wolfgang humbucker. The series honours the spirit of Eddie’s inventive genius and the tireless pursuit of his own sound that led to one of the most recognisable guitars in rock ‘n’ roll history.
