Fender Custom Shop LTD '58 Stratocaster Journeyman Relic, Chocolate 3-Tone Sunburst Overview

This gorgeous '58 Stratocaster has been meticulously crafted by Fender Custom Shop’s artisnal luthiers, utlising only the finest tonewoods and components available. With this Strat, you have all the desirable qualities of an authentic '50s Fender - the tone, the looks and the feel - at a much more attainable price. Throw in handwound pickups and a stunning Flame Maple neck and you have a truly outstanding example of Strat.

Classic Feel & Sound

The base model of this particular Custom Shop is a 1958 Stratocaster, one of the rarest and most sought-after guitars out there. The Fender Custom Shop have used their thorough knowledge of the '58 Strat to create a guitar that could easily be mistaken for one that was made during Fender’s golden era. At the core of this Strat’s astounding tone is the period-correct two-piece Ash body, which delivers the balanced and articulate response that you’d expect from a quality tonewood. The body is coated in a thin nitrocellulose lacquer, which ages gracefully and promotes resonance & sustain by allowing the tonewood to breathe.

The old-school Fender playability is catered for by the Soft “V” neck profile and vintage-style narrow-tall 6105 frets, which give this guitar the comfortable feel of a '54 Strat. The roasted AAA Flame Maple neck is arguably one of the most enticing aspects of this Custom Shop Stratocaster, boasting a beautiful grain pattern that needs to be seen in person. Whilst this is a Journeyman Relic guitar, the back of the neck has been given the Heavy Relic treatment for a satin-smooth feel.

Gorgeous Worn-In Look

This Stratocaster has, apart from the neck’s back, undergone the Journeyman Relic process. This is one of the more subtle Relic treatments and bestows the guitar with the endearing, slightly worn-in character of an old Fender that’s been treated with care and mostly played at home over the years. Across the guitar, you can see the odd scratch, mark & playing wear and some oxidisation of the parts.

Classic Strat Tone

When it comes to pickups, this Custom Shop Stratocaster doesn’t disappoint with its trio of outstanding hand-wired pickups. The neck and the middle feature Josefina-wound Tomatillo pickups, which have a crisp, sweet and articulate sound that’s perfect for those classic Strat tones. The middle uses Reverse Wound/Reverse Polarity wiring, which helps to eradicate hum. The bridge is loaded with a uniquely overwound Ancho Poblano single-coil that can nail pushed vintage as well as biting, bold Texas-style sounds.

Modern Reliability

Whilst this Custom Shop Stratocaster has an authentically '50s heart, it benefits from modern build-quality and top-notch components. The result is a Strat that has the best elements of a classic Fender with greater reliability. It’s a fantastic combination of classic and contemporary.

Featuring a bold 3-Tone Chocolate Sunburst finish, a remarkable AAA Flame Maple Neck and excellent handwound pickups, this Stratocaster is a testament to the craftsmanship and skill of the Fender Custom Shop luthiers.

Awesome guitar. I was looking for a custom shop with minimal aging. The journeyman finish fit that bill. It looks like an old used but well cared for guitar. The neck on this thing was amazing. Nice chunky 50s neck with incredible flame on the back. This benefitted from a smooth finish thanks to much heavier relicing on the back of the neck which really brought out the flame and made it very smooth to play The guitar was set up very well and sounds fantastic. All in all it is perfect for me.
