Fender Product Overview

Designed for powerful, flexible tone with smooth playing feel, this robust and rich-sounding bass combines the best features of Fender’s classic basses to create a "hybrid" model with sleek, authentic Fender style but is packed with new tones.

There’s a wealth of useful tones hiding inside this bass’ pickups and electronics. Powered by a punchy vintage-style split-coil Precision Bass pickup in the middle position and a growling Vintage Noiseless Jazz Bass bridge pickup, this bass rises to any occasion. The robust control scheme includes a three-band active EQ with treble, mid and bass controls—each with boost and cut to accurately shape your tone—along with a pan pot for precision blending of the pickups’ potent sound.

The active/passive switch makes it easy to access both vintage-styled and modern voices, further extending this instrument’s sonic flexibility. The Fender HiMass bridge improves every note’s sustain and resonance, while enhancing the attack for lively tone that lets your sonic personality shine through. The "C"-shaped maple neck is comfortable for all playing styles and hosts a 1.5" synthetic bone nut and fast-playing 12"-radius fingerboard with 20 medium jumbo frets.

The alder body bears a durable gloss polyester finish that looks great under the spotlight while being tough enough to shrug off the abuse of gigging and traveling. Classic Precision Bass appointments include knurled flat-top control knobs, nickel/chrome hardware, black pickup covers, pearloid dot inlays and a 3-ply B/W/B pickguard.

Wow! What a machine. For me it’s always starts with the feel of the neck; width, profile, frets, action. This one plays a treat. Slim, good action, frets well finished. I compared it to a passive (American assembled) Fender Performer P bass and, honestly, there’s not a lot in it. Certainly not five hundred quids worth of difference. Plus I got the active circuit with all the tone shaping possibilities. Very, very pleased with this one. Right, I’m off to make noise. Rock’n’Roll, baby. Rock’n’Roll!

I’ve had three of these models now. I started in the early 2000s with the passive p/j Mexican made, sunburst, gold anodised scratch-plate, maple neck. I nodded the heck out of it, ashtrays, thumb rest, Rio grande pickups. And while it served me well, it wasn’t enough. Then a couple of years back I bought the all active Mexican deluxe in black with gold scratchplate. Again a great guitar, lovely jazz neck, small precision body. But not enough. I can’t afford the American elite. Then this bad boy rocks up. Active and passive. Wow, just wow. Built beautifully. Chamfered upper fret access. Everything on this bass has been upgraded to a more American degree of features. Sound is great, plenty of precision grunt, but get that active circuit on and roll to the bridge and you’re snapping away to Jamiroquai. I seriously love this bass. I’ve given it to my techie for the week for a once over. I miss it. I want it back now, dammit. Came with good quality gig bag and candy. Very nice instrument.

Great value for a money and a useful compromise if you're stuck between a jazz and precision or active and passive bass. The high-mass bridge gives the bass a really nice resonance and the jazz neck is great for smaller hands, particularly if you prefer the precision body. I like the option to go passive or active and being able to blend the P and J pickups is cool. The first one of these I took delivery of had electronic problems, which I've seen mentioned elsewhere - but given the choice I'd buy this again.
