Gibson Les Paul Special, Vintage Cherry Overview

Gibson Les Paul Special Overview by GAK.

A new year, a new decade and a fantastic new Gibson Guitars product lineup that is sure to have something for everyone. After a very successful relaunch in 2019, the Gibson USA range has drawn inspiration from it's roots while offering the very best in modern luthiery technques to deliver a true modern classic. Adding to the Gibson Original series you now have the Gibson Les Paul Special in Vintage Cherry, Gibson Les Paul Junior in Ebony and the Gibson ES-345 in Sixties Cherry and Vintage Sunburst to name a few. Other notable additions are the Gibson '70s Flying V and '70s Explorer which are both available in Classic White, the Gibson Les Paul Special Tribute Humbucker available in four colours and last but certainly not least the brand new Gibson Slash Les Paul Standard available in Appetite Amber, November Burst, Vermillion Burst and Anaconda Burst.

The new Les Paul Special returns to the classic design that made it relevant, played and loved shaping sound across generations and genres of music. It pays tribute to Gibson's Golden Era of innovation and brings authenticity back to life. Originally introduced in 1955, the Les Paul Special has been embraced by musicians for over 60 years. It is based on the Les Paul Junior with a slab mahogany body, fat 50s-style mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, wraparound bridge, an additional rhythm P-90 pickup, binding on the neck and additional controls for the rhythm pickup and the 3-way toggle switch.

My first-ever Gibson, after a musical lifetime with 3 Fender Strats and 2 Teles; a US G&L ASAT and a PRS Santana and a Custom 22. As a veteran guitarist I must say that I found the Les Paul much easier to play than I'd expected and today I can't work out why I vowed 40 years ago never to own — or even borrow — a Gibson! I like the earthy growl of the P90 pick-ups and I'm very happy with the guitar… my 60s American Strat will remain my No.1 guitar until, at least, I play a few gigs with the Les Paul Special, however…
