Good short scale bass guitar, excellent build quality for the price

I don't think there was really anything wrong with it but it wasn't for me. This was going to be my first foray into the world of bass having played six strings acoustically for many years. Having read many reviews and following a personal recommendation I believed that the Guild Jumbo Junior Short Scale Acoustic Bass would be an ideal first bass guitar for someone more used to the scale of a regular acoustic guitar. It's obviously a beautifully made and finished instrument but to me it felt a bit like a toy and the out of the box setup was poor. I know that online retailers tend not to make any setup adjustments and that manufacturers leave the action a bit high so that you can adjust to your tastes but this was too high (E string had more than 4mm at the 12th fret with only around 2.5mm of the bridge saddle exposed) and the neck relief was very slightly convex too, so correcting that would make the action even higher. First fret action was perfect. I'm quite experienced at setting up guitars but felt that, once the neck had been adjusted correctly, filing the bridge saddle down as far as possible, right to the point where the strings were almost touching the wooden bridge could still result in the action being in excess of 3mm at the 12th fret, would have been playable but too high for my liking. Still it sounded great both acoustically and plugged in, producing deep, beautiful tones that would put most full size basses to shame. I would have been more than happy to work on the set up but the final nail was that it was advertised as being supplied with a Guild Deluxe Padded Gig Bag but apparently that's no longer the case (pun intended!). The retailer was trying to source the correct gig bag for me FOC but when this wasn't forthcoming after a couple of weeks I unfortunately felt I had no choice but to return the guitar. Not a good first bass experience and to be honest I'd think twice before buying another Guild.
