Sequential Prophet-10 Desktop Synthesizer Nearly New Overview

Overview by GAK

The Sequential Prophet-10 Nearly New Rev 4 combines all of the previous Prophet revisions to create what Dave Smith himself calls “the best of all Prophets”. While this synth has the same sonic pedigree as its predeccesors, it has the advantages of a modern synth - including MIDI & CV connecitivity, a configurable Unison mode, polyphonic Glide and velocity/aftertouch sensitivity.

10 Analog Voices

Not many are aware of the first Prophet-10, which was launched alongside the Prophet-5 in 1978. Because the 10-voice version packed two P5 voice boards into a P5-sized chassis, it was prone to overheating & going out of tune - resulting in it being swiftly recalled. Thanks to advances in technology, Dave Smith and the Sequential team have finally realised their original vision of the Prophet with the P10 Rev 4.

The Prophet 10 Rev 4’s extra voices give it a sonic advantage over its 5-voiced sibling, especially if you want to design patches with long releases where voice stealing can occur or use extended chords in your music that require more than 5 notes. If you’re looking to pull off realistic electric piano sounds and big string pads without having to worry about stolen notes, the P-10 is the one to go for.

If you’re a fan of Prophet-5’s characteristic voice stealing (used to great effect on the classic song “Bette Davis Eyes”), the Prophet-10 can emulate it as of firmware 1.5.0. This update added a feature where you can switch on a 5-voice limit mode to replicate the P-5’s behaviour. Plus, with Polyphonic Unison (PU2) switched on, you essentially have a supercharged 2 voice per note P5!

Compact Module

This is the Desktop version of the Sequential Prophet-10 Rev4, which condenses the exact same sound and effortless interface of its keyboard-equipped sibling into an ultra-compact, portable and robust steel module. It’s the one we’d recommend if you need to conserve space in your studio, need an easily transportable synth solution for gigs or have a master controller that you prefer to use. Because the Prophet 10 can receive velocity and aftertouch, we suggest using it alongside a keyboard or controller that can make the most of these expressive features.

The Prophet 10 Rev 4 Desktop’s classy looks are completed by a premium hand-oiled & sustainable Black Walnut heartwood trim.

If you’re in the market for a lightweight and portable module that can deliver an iconic analogue synth sound, the Sequential Prophet-10 Rev 4 Desktop is hard to beat. Its modern enhancements make it a no-brainer if you need a vintage sound in your music and productions.
