Steinberger Spirit XT-2 Standard Bass, Black Overview

Steinberger Spirit XT-2 Overview by GAK:

Steinberger presents the new XT-2 Standard 4-string Electric Bass Outfit, the Ultimate Travel Bass™ featuring the revolutionary Steinberger body design, patented DoubleBall™ Bass Bridge, Patented 40:1 Ratio Direct-Pull tuning system, powerful Steinberger HB pickups, plus a deluxe gigbag. There was nothing like Ned Steinberger’s guitars and basses when they were first introduced in 1979. Today, with their lightweight and headless design, Steinberger basses are still bold, modern instruments that offer players both a smooth tonal response and rock solid intonation at any position on the neck.

The XT-2 Standard Electric Bass Outfit features the revolutionary Steinberger Bass design with a Basswood body and 3-piece Hard Maple neck that together resonate as a single piece of wood. For traveling musicians, the XT-2 is the Ultimate Travel Bass™. At 38.5” long and only 7.5lbs, its ergonomic design makes it easy to take anywhere including overhead airline compartments. And thanks to its headless construction and 3-piece Hard Maple neck, the XT-2 isn’t as sensitive to temperature changes, which makes it virtually indestructible! The neck has a comfortable 1960's style SlimTaper™-D profile, 24 medium jumbo frets, a 34” scale length, and a 14” radius. A folding leg rest sits compactly on the lower bout of the body. A deluxe padded gigbag is included.

Steinberger basses like Steinberger guitars are renowned for their exceptional tone and intonation at all positions. With no headstock, the XT-2 has a Zero Nut Fret with a width of 1.50” that moves up to 2.156” at the 12th fret as the neck subtly widens to 0.70” string spacing at the bridge. The Patented 40:1 Ratio Direct-Pull tuning system and Patented DoubleBall™ Bass Bridge with steel saddle provide exceptional stability and sustain. Without a headstock, the weight of the XT-2 feels more balanced than a typical electric bass. Fine tuning adjustments are made at the bridge and string changes can be made fast! The Steinberger XT-2 is set up at the factory with Steinberger DoubleBall™ (45,65,85,105) strings. The Steinberger XT-2 Standard is powered by Steinberger full tone HB-1 (bridge) and HB-2 (neck) humbucker pickups. Controls feature black Steinberger style knobs for Neck Pickup Volume, Bridge Pickup Volume, and Master Tone. The Steinberger XT-2 Standard Outfit comes with a two year warranty.  Steinberger- State of the Instrument.

great sounding bass but has an unnatural playing position when standing.

I just bought this to record bass parts for my own compositions so didn't expect nor want much but actually I'm really pleased with the quality and sound. Better than some of my more expensive guitars so I'll probably pick the guitar version of this at some point!

Slightly lower output than my Fender P-bass, so works better in my odd-ball PA. not much lighter, almost the same length, but longer fretboard. Neck is narrower, more like a J-bass. Very impressed, especially for this price.

Great sound through a compressor. Feels good to play, I don't have the "over-reaching" problem, I guess I must have a long left arm ? Finish (Black Gloss) seems to be quite easily marked with a pick, so you might want to invest in some protection under the strings between pick-ups to keep it pristine.
