Universal Audio Apollo X4 Heritage Edition Thunderbolt 3 Audio Interface, QUAD Overview

The Universal Audio Apollo X4 Thunderbolt 3 lets musicians track, overdub, and mix larger projects with ease. It has four Unison preamps which let you track through sounds from Neve, Helios, Capital Studios, Manley, Ampex, UA and more with close to zero latency. There are also two Hi-Z instrument inputs that also have Unison technology and two headphone outputs which make it easy to work with other musicians in the room.

The audio conversation has been redesigned by UA to deliver 127 dB dynamic range and -117 dB THD+N. Combine up to four Thunderbolt Apollos and six total UAD-2 devices, adding more I/O and DSP.

The Apollo X series also has new Dual-Crystal clocking, with dedicated crystal oscillators for 44.1/88.2/176.4 kHz and 48/96/192 kHz sample rates —resulting in extremely low jitter, measured at less than 10 picoseconds at all sample rates. For you, this means pure, artefact-free recordings and solid stereo imaging.

Thunderbolt connectivity and real-time processing mean there will be almost zero latency. Apollo X series audio interfaces work with all major DAWs.

*Please note - Thunderbolt cable is not included.

Super sound quality and straightforward to use, came with masses of extras, which I’m still getting my head around.

Great product no doubt about it. Excellent sound quality. Installation on Apple Silicon Monterey MacOS was not super-easy but after following tutorial it installed and just works. I use it with Max/MSP to generate sound for live performances as I am not typical user who does some "recordings". Comes in as part of Core Audio devices and sounds great. It should be stated I did not need to install Luna or UA Connect which came with the downloaded DMG software package as for now I don't need them in my workflow. I just needed the driver. So I think Universal Audio could make it clearer in the DMG that when you just want to generate sound only driver is needed. I also don't use the UA plugins for now as I use it for raw sound which I process myself in Max/MSP so I cannot say much about them, will try when I need them. My live-performances will be also running at 192Khz sampling rate, as it is not a problem while using Apollo and Apple Silicon computers. Also remember that the device box does not contain Thunderbolt 3 cable. I did not know that and had to take a trip to Apple store for the cable which was around 40GBP. I am glad I could get it from Apple on the same day and start using Apollo. Overall highly recommend the Apollo sound card to anybody who just wants top quality sound from their work, yes it makes a difference both for the artist and for the viewers.
