I haven’t had time to try everything yet as the foot pedal is packed with different effects but it’s a great product

Boy is this fun. There's a fair amount to get your head round here. Thank goodness that the dark nights are coming. A very clever pedal unit. Sofari, sogoody.

In the world of effects this is now an old unit dating back to 1999. That it’s still made is a tribute to the quality of the original design. Normally I avoid Line 6 stuff like the plague having tried a couple of their amplifiers, but the DL-4 seems to be a different kettle of fish altogether and I’ve noticed several well-respected musicians using them. By 2019 standards the delay models probably aren’t that accurate, but do manage to capture a good impression of the originals whilst giving the unit a character of its own. Careful use of the modulation and depth controls can result in some very evocative sounds indeed. In addition to the standard delays I found the sweep echo, auto-volume echo and reverse echo models to be very good for sparking new ideas. For an old design there’s an awful lot packed in here for the money including a rudimentary looper and it’s all instantly accessible and easy to use. The unit will also repay time spent carefully tweaking the controls, there are some quite exotic tones lurking in there if you go looking. Adding an expression pedal allows morphing from one version of a delay program to another (from a Memory Man chorus to cascading ‘analogue’ echoes for example). The unit does show its age in the limited number of program slots available and the relatively short length of time allowed for looping, but personally I don’t have an issue with these. If I’d wanted something more sophisticated that’s exactly what I’d have bought. If you want an up to the minute unit which painstakingly replicates vintage delay effects then look elsewhere, however if like me you require a relatively inexpensive delay which can produce some quite unusual sounds of its own and is fun to use, then the DL-4 is still relevant. It’s as well to be aware that any expression pedal used with the DL-4 needs to have its potentiometer connected so that the resistance varies between tip and sleeve of the connecting cable. A TRS pedal/cable won’t work. I'm giving 4 stars because of the unit's slight limitations but I was aware of all of them before buying and therefore personally have no complaints.
