Epiphone Firebird, Vintage Sunburst Overview

Epiphone Firebird Overview by GAK.

A new year, a new decade and a fantastic new Epiphone Guitars product lineup that is sure to have something for everyone. Taking inspiration from the current Gibson USA range we have the Epiphone Original Collection which is aimed at the purists with models such as the Epiphone Les Paul Standard 50s & 60s available in six great finishes including Bourbon Burst, Iced tea and Heritage Cherry Sunburst, the Epiphone Les Paul Special in TV Yellow, the Epiphone Explorer and Flying V in Ebony and the Epiphone SG Standard '61 in Vintage Cherry to name a few. To add to this we also have the Epiphone Modern Collection which brings modern appointments to a vintage classic for extra tonal options and a different playing experience. Models such as the Epiphone Les Paul Classic available in Ebony, Honeyburst or Heritage Cherry Sunburst, The Epiphone Les Paul Modern with its contoured heel for extra upper fret access and the Epiphone Les Paul Studio which has been given a revamp for 2020 and offered in some fantastic colours such as Smokehouse Burst, Ebony, Alpine White and Wine Red.

The Epiphone Firebird from the Inspired by Gibson Collection recreates the classic Firebird as it was first produced in 1963. Featuring a Mahogany body in a Vintage Sunburst finish, Grover® 18:1 ratio mini tuners, and powered by Epiphone ProBucker™ humbuckers with CTS electronics.

A very well made guitar / love the looks and playability, plus the fantastic reach high up the fretboard. Definitely a keeper!

This guitar looks great in the photos, but it's so much nicer when you unbox it! The finish is flawless. I saw a few reviews where people had picked up on a few very minor 'defects', but I could not find anything wrong. My guitar is perfect, and was well boxed to ensure no damage during transport. The action was set ok, I'm hoping to lower it slightly but the guitar plays really well straight out of the box. Grover tuners turn nicely, as do the CTS pots. Excellent value guitar, I'm very impressed for the money!

So why only four stars? Very minor quibbles - the neck was pancake flat, no relief whatsoever and intonation out on the top strings. There was no allen key for adjusting the truss rod included with the guitar. The strings (as is often the case with new guitars) were cheap and nasty - totally dead. The frets, whilst even and rolled were tarnished and rough. Overall a very nice guitar with some minor set up issues that were easily addressed by an experienced guitar tech but I was surprised that they hadn'tt already been spotted by the dealer. But then it's not a £1000 guitar.....
