Boss SYB-5 Bass Synthesiser Pedal Overview

In 1996 Boss released the SYB-3, which was to be the first bass synthesiser effect in a compact floor pedal. The SYB-3 became a hit with both bassists and guitarists and original units are still highly sought after by pedal aficionados.

The Boss SYB-5 is the latest incarnation of this classic design and utilises DSP (Digital Signal Processing) to bring you both a faithful recreation of the original SYB-3 sound and new, enhanced synth sounds at your feet! The SYB-5 has 11 synth variations, each one can be tweaked with ease using the controls. There is also a 'Pitch Hold' function so that you can freeze notes and play over the top. An optional expression pedal allows the SYB-5 tones to be manipulated even further.

GAK's Boss SYB-5 FAQ's

Q1: What is DSP?
A: DSP stands for Digital Signal Processing. DSP is used in the SYB-5 to take an analog signal from your instrument and convert it to digital, effects can then be processed over the signal in real time.

Q2: How do I use the 'Pitch Hold' function?
A: To use the pitch hold function you need to gently push down on the pedal when you play. The TE-2 will now hold that ambient sound in the background until you take your foot off the pedal.

Q3: Can I use other instruments with the SYB-5 other than a bass guitar?
A: Yes, you can use any instrument with a 1/4" jack. You may find that some of the tracking is slightly off as it is designed for bass frequencies. The SYB-5 is even popularly used with electronic drum machines!

Q4: Which Expression pedal should I used with the SYB-5?
A: The external expression function can be used with the Roland EV-5 expression pedal (sold seperately).

Q5: How long is the battery life?
A: The SYB-5 uses a 9V PP-3 type battery. Using an Alkaline battery (6LR61) will give upto 6 hours of use. The SYB-5 can also be powered by an optional AC adapter such as the Boss PSA.
