Catalinbread Perseus Octave Down Fuzz Pedal
Overview by GAK
Catalinbread’s Perseus is essentially two potent effects in a compact stompbox - glorious analogue fuzz and an earth-shaking Sub Octaver. The Perseus gives you a universe of enormous tones at your fingertips!
The inspiration for this pedal’s name isn’t the hero from Greek mythology. Instead, it derives its name from the Perseus Cluster, where a black hole is emitting the lowest known note - in the universe! It’s a fitting moniker for this pedal and once you’ve turned it on, you’ll hear why.
With the Perseus, you have two effects that can be used independently or, using the Blend control, mixed together however you see fit.
First up is the roaring Fuzz circuit, which can be used on its own with the Blend control fully counter-clockwise. There’s plenty of singing sustain for leads and crunching gain for bone-rattling riffs. The Perseus features a well-tuned gating circuit, which allows you to hold notes for a near-infinite amount of time and stay silent when you aren’t playing.
Powerful Sub Octaver
Next is the Sub Octave, arguably the most enticing aspect of Catalinbread’s Perseus. You’ve got a choice of one or two octaves below your original signal for maximum fatness. Plus, you can use the Sub Octaver independently of the Fuzz by turning the Blend knob fully clockwise. With the Sub Octaver, you can pull off an array of tones including fat synths, stoner rock mayhem, reedy lead lines and more.
A huge advantage of the Perseus is how well the Sub Octaver tracks across the neck, especially when you use a neck pickup with the tone rolled off. With the bridge pickup engaged and the tone maxed, you can achieve unpredictable, glitchy tones as well. The Perseus is highly interactive with your guitar’s tone and volume so get experimenting!
Handy Cut Control
The Cut control acts as a High Pass filter and tightens up the bass frequencies. With the sheer low end that the Perseus puts out, this is an essential feature as it allows you to sculpt out any flub if you encounter it (particularly when sending the Perseus into an already overdriven amp or pedal). You can also use the Cut control to create more refined textures for lead lines.
Drive Your Input
Catalinbread’s Perseus boasts a tonne of output, which means you can use the Volume control to drive the front end of your amp.
Once you’ve plugged into the Perseus, we’re sure you’ll love its raw and powerful tone. With a straightforward set of controls that can produce a range of inspiring tones, the Catalinbread Perseus will make a great addition to any pedalboard. If you love fat tones with a capital F, the Perseus should be at the top of your list.Every brand new Catalinbread pedal comes with a 3-year warranty, which covers defects in materials and/or workmanship.
