Gretsch G6134T LTD Penguin with Bigsby, Ebony Fingerboard, Two-Tone Smoke Grey/Violet Metallic Overview

Gretsch G6134T LTD Penguin with Bigsby, Ebony Fingerboard, Two-Tone Smoke Grey/Violet Metallic Overview.

Clad in a splendid two-tone Smoke Grey/Violet Metallic finish, the G6134TSL-SMG-LTD Limited Edition Penguin™ with Bigsby® offers an exquisite take on the rarest of Gretsch® birds.

The Penguin’s chambered mahogany body with arched maple top captures harmonic richness by letting air resonate between the top and body for livelier and more articulate tone, while a pair of TV Jones® TV Classic pickups beautifully project bright, twangy notes with a hint of growl similar to late-1950s Filter’Trons. The result is an extraordinary voice ideal for distinctive rock ‘n’ roll licks, chiming country rhythms or articulate rockabilly riffs. A three-position toggle switch, two volume pickup controls, master volume and master tone open up endless tonal possibilities.

Its premium features also include a set maple neck, 12” radius ebony fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets, Bigsby B3C tailpiece, arched rocking bar bridge with pinned ebony base, Grover® Imperial™ tuning machines and bone nut.

Richly appointed, this limited edition beauty is decked out with silver sparkle body and neck binding, mother of pearl Neo-Classic™ inlays, jeweled arrow control knobs, nickel hardware, Violet Metallic pickguard with ghosted Gretsch and Penguin logos and Violet metallic headcap.

I've wanted to own a Gretsch Penguin ever since visiting the David Gilmour Guitar exhibition at Christie's in London and seeing the one he owned. Unfortunately, his Penguin was some way out of my price-range, but when this gorgeous Smoke Grey edition was released my jaw dropped and I decided to take the plunge. I am certainly not disappointed. The guitar is a beautiful thing to behold, and came well packaged and snugly fitted in a premium Gretsch hard shell case. Lifting the guitar out of the case, I was initially surprised by the weight, it is heavier than I'd expected, and this no bad thing, as I prefer a heavier guitar. The finish is both detailed and outstanding, aside from a few buckle marks on the back where it has been tested by a previous potential buyer (minus a point for GAK, who should really ensure people are more careful). These will buff out, and no doubt I'll accidentally add a few scrapes of my own so no Biggie. As far as playability is concerned, the guitar has a nice fast, low action, and the ebony fretboard is a joy. The bigsby tremelo system is well built and easy to use, and folds nicely out of the way when not in use. Sound-wise, everything is clean and bright. The guitar favours the treble tones as designed, but a good amp will reign it back in. All in all, this is by far the best guitar I've ever played, and I'm super impressed.
