“Pleasantly surprised - very high quality modelling.” The Fender Tone Master Pro gives a strong impression of quality as soon as it is removed from its packaging. It clearly has a very strong build and feels quite heavy for its size. When you turn on the unit you are greeted by a large colour touchscreen, footswitches which double as rotary encoders and all the input and output options ever likely to be needed. An expression pedal is not built into this unit so that needs to be bought separately, if wanted, but it’s good to have the choice not to have one, and the unit is smaller than it would otherwise be with a built-in expression pedal. In use the Tone Master Pro is easy to set up, learn, and use with its large touch screen giving a good representation of what you would expect to see if using a traditional pedal board and amp. There are fewer amps and effects than can be found in some other units but all the important groups are covered including Marshalls, Vox, and many Fender amps and the modelling standard is excellent. This unit replicates analogue devices very accurately - much better than most, I have to say. It’s quite an expensive unit but it offers excellent performance in exchange. So why have I not awarded this unit 5 stars? It became apparent to me fairly quickly that you are not able to save patches to your own computer or phone but are expected (or should I say forced) to use Fender’s own cloud to back-up and restore unless you are willing to risk losing all your presets. Even then there is no guarantee of being able to access Fender’s cloud from anywhere and at any time. Allowing customers the freedom to choose how they store their data would be good here. This unit is new to the marketplace so could benefit from further development in terms of both further modelled equipment and usability features such as being able to store favourite model settings for global recall in new patches. Additionally, good though the amp models are, it would be good to have the option to reduce or even remove elements that may be less desirable to some, like modelled cross-over distortion, for example. Overall the Fender Tone Master Pro is an excellent, high-quality device that offers a great deal to customers now and is likely to see further improvement over time as Fender releases updates.
